Amazon And Facebook Likely To Bid For Premier League Streaming Rights
The Premier League might be just one of the many exciting and quality leagues in world football, but it is certainly the one that involves money in mind boggling terms and the biggest names from all possible arenas. Continuing that trend might soon see Amazon and Facebook trying to bag the rights to stream the Premier League.
Ed Woodward, vice-chairman of Man Utd, claimed that this decision will further escalate the huge financial boom for the top clubs playing in England’s top tier of football.
According to Guardian, in Woodward’s quarterly call with bank executives who invest in United’s shares on the New York stock exchange, he mentioned that the aforementioned duo was interested in buying the rights from 2018-19.
Those were, however, sold to Sky and BT for a whopping £8.4bn. Amazon now has the rights for the UK ATP Tennis Tour and also the NFL Game on Thursdays, while Facebook shows 22 games a season of Major League Soccer, according to their deal.
When questioned on his prediction about the giants bidding for the Premier League streaming rights next year, Woodward replied: “Absolutely, I think they will enter the mix; anecdotally, there was incredibly strong interest in the last cycle.
“We are hearing that around the Premier League table and we are also hearing that from a European perspective in terms of interest in the Champions League and Europa rights. I do think we are going to see an increasing engagement from these and we would welcome the interest.”
The Manchester United transfer incharge is a business genius, and that showed yet again, with the club announcing a record income in 2016-17, of £581m, despite the absence of Champions League from the Theatre of Dreams.
