Scouts and intricately hired transfer teams sit through and usually plan moves months before they are executed. Generally, the manager’s wish list of players is looked at, and detailed plans are drawn as to which talent can be secured and how.

Occasionally, however, advice and suggestions come from elsewhere – an old teammate, a well-meaning pundit or perhaps a relative of the player involved. A similar case seems to have occurred over who Manchester United should sign come January.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and Jose Mourinho share a fond rapport, the latter having been at the helm of the side and leading them to La Liga glory years earlier. It now appears that this relationship still continues with Perez pinpointing who the Red Devils should sign next, and interestingly, the player is not from Madrid.

Reports in Spanish outlet Don Balon claim that Perez has expressly told Mourinho to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes, capitalizing on the player’s desire to leave the Camp Nou in January.

The 24-year-old, who was purchased from Valencia last year for a fee of €35 million plus add-ons, isn’t happy. The Portuguese hasn’t been able to cement his position in the Spanish side’s competitive midfield, and has failed to be worth his strong price-tag.

Earlier this summer, the midfielder supposedly expressed a desire to leave, with Juventus allegedly interested in securing his services. However, the Old Lady didn’t go ahead with the deal, after the initial idea of loaning him with an option to buy couldn’t be met.

Now, if the player sets his sights upon the Premier League giants, he might find the ideal destination. However, United’s midfield is just at competitive, if not more, and if any move is to be agreed, then he must be adamant to prove his worth. It remains to be seen whether Perez has perhaps led Mourinho towards a gem.
