The Heartbreaking Story Behind Sevilla’s Unbelievable Fightback Against Liverpool

Liverpool were on the verge of a terrific victory against Sevilla in a sensational Champions League Group E encounter, but it wasn’t to be.
The Reds were 3-0 up at the halfway mark courtesy of two goals from Roberto Firmino, while Sadio Mane too, found the back of the net at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.
Although Sevilla had 67% of the possession in the first 45 minutes, they managed only a single shot on goal, while Liverpool looked unplayable at times with seven shots on target out of the attempted eight.
While many thought the match to be over, it turned out to be a thriller at the end. The Sevillistas were on fire after the break. A quarter into the second half, and Sevilla had turned the 0-3 deficit to 2-3. They didn’t stop there, and attacked with every chance that came their way.
The Spanish outfit fancied their chances to get their equalizer, and eventually, were rewarded when Pizarro turned one home in the third and final minute of the stoppage time to level the scores. An absurd Liverpool defense had no idea what happened.
However, the way Sevilla gave their heart out in the second half to register an improbable comeback had one harrowing reason.
According to reports from Spain, during the interval, Sevilla manager Eduardo Berizzo revealed that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Later in the evening, football pundit Guillem Balague confirmed the news on Twitter.
Sevilla players certainly played the second half with desperation to make a comeback, so as to give a tribute to their beloved manager.
In the post-match conference, the 48-year-old quoted: “When you are faithful to attacking play, football ends up paying you back. Football shows you should always keep believing and that is what happened today.”
