Daniel Sturridge’s Reaction to Marcus Rashford’s Goal
Marcus Rashford became England’s youngest ever debut goal scorer, and also the third youngest goal scorer (behind Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen), as he found the net after just 3 minutes in the Three Lions’ international friendly against Australia at the Stadium of Light.
The Manchester United youngster was quick to pounce on a dropped ball in the box, which came from Raheem Sterling’s deflected cross, and smashed it past the Australian keeper on a hard-hit volley.
England manager Roy Hodgson had heaped praises on the 18-year-old before the game by saying: “I think he’ll (Rashford) be as excited to play as people are to see him. He’s not been phased at all at Manchester United so let’s hope that will pass on to us at international level. He’s got enormous pace and is very direct. He’s technically a good player but of course he’s young and has a lot to learn.”
Even Rashford’s celebration following his debut goal received praises, with Glenn Hoddle stating: “He was very calm in his celebrations. As a young man, he could have gone berserk!”
Amidst all the celebration and praises, there was one member of the English national team not happy with Marcus Rashford’s goal: Daniel Sturridge.
Sturridge was replaced by Rashford in this friendly’s Starting XI, as the Liverpool striker picked up an injury earlier this week. And with the 27-year-old’s frequent injuries, and Rashford’s amazing performances for both club and country, it looks very likely that the teenager will be chosen above Sturridge for England’s final Euro 16 squad.
