Wayne Rooney has urged Paul Pogba to take more responsibility for his performances.

Pogba starred for France in the 2018 World Cup final last month, helping Les Bleus lift the ultimate trophy with a stellar performance against Croatia in Moscow.

However, a month later, the midfielder has found himself struggling once again at Manchester United. He did begin the new Premier League campaign by bagging a crucial goal from the spot, but his overall performances in both the games so far have been far from impressive.

Following the Red Devils’ 3-2 defeat at the Falmer Stadium, Pogba admitted that his attitude wasn’t right, whilst also claiming that Brighton were much better prepared for the game as compared to his own side.

Apart from his mediocre displays since the start of the season, the Frenchman has also been surrounded with negativity, especially related to his poor relationship with manager Jose Mourinho. The dynamic between the pair has consistently worsened since last season, and no resolution appears to be in sight at the moment.

Amid Pogba’s issues at Old Trafford, former Manchester United captain and legend Wayne Rooney has stepped in to offer some valuable advice to the 25-year-old.

Speaking to CNN World Sport, the Englishman urged the World Cup winner to take more responsibility for his performances on the field, and not rely on Mourinho to get the best out of himself.

“He (Pogba) is a fantastic player, but he has to do it for himself. If they’re going to win the title, he’ll be the main player in terms of them doing that,” said the DC United forward.

“You hear a lot of people saying Jose Mourinho needs to get the best out of him, but he needs to do it for himself and prove he’s at that level to help Manchester United.”

Rooney also acknowledged the unnecessary hype built around the midfielder by his agent Mino Raiola, by adding: “Surrounding him is a lot of publicity. If Jose can get the best out of Paul this season, that will be a huge plus for United and a step in the right direction of winning the title.”
