Player Ratings: Valencia 2-1 Manchester United

Reuters/Peter Cziborra

2-1 at the end of the group stages and Manchester United will be kicking themselves for not having won given how results turned out elsewhere. Here’s how the side fared during the outing.

Romero- 5.2

Not too good from the shotstopper, who was arguably at the mercy of a mediocre backline and a resilient Valencia attack.

Valencia- 5.6

Not the best night for the Ecuadorian in Spain as his tackles were often late and heavy. Lucky not to have seen red.

Jones- 4.5

Found the net, but on the wrong side of the field and had an all-round sub-par defensive showing.

Bailly- 6.0

The better defender amongst the lot, but a bit rusty back from injury.

Rojo- 5

Subbed off at half-time, the Argentine was unable to put in the kind of showing that a traditional Mourinho fullback ought to.

Fellaini- 5

United’s Champions League hero was toothless against the Spanish side and the holding midfielder role is clearly not meant for his style of play.

Pogba- 6.8

A fairly decent performance from the Frenchman and an apt response to being benched by Mourinho in the past weeks.

Pereira- 5.8

A strong case will have been made by the youngster as to why he should he played more often. Arguably the most solid showing prior to the substitutes adding energy to the game.

Mata- 5.9

Missed a late chance that may just have been able to put United back into the game with some hope.

Fred- 4

Easily United’s worst player of the night. Not at all indicative of his sizable price-tag given the poor showings and antics.

Lukaku- 5.8

Still not Lukaku’s time at United as the Belgian looked lackluster and lonely upfront for much of the game.

Substitutes

Young- 6.0

Singlehandedly injected much pace and creativity into the game, particularly during its dying minutes when United seemed a completely different side entirely.

Rashford- 7.5

Undoubtedly the club’s best player during a sordid night. Their key shots on target came from the Englishman and with his second goal in a span of a week, he’ll truly be gutted that the result turned out how it did.

Lingard- 5.0

Couldn’t do much and was arguably brought on too late to make a solid impact.
