Eric Cantona is back, and the Manchester United legend has brought his swagger and wit along with him.

Despite the Red Devils’ recent resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, they are unlikely to fight for the Premier League title this season. At present, the trophy has two genuine contenders – Liverpool and Manchester City – both of which are United’s major arch-rivals.

Cantona was recently asked which to the two teams he believes would go on to win the title. But as usual, the Frenchman produced one of his typical replies: “Nobody, no answer. It’s like if you ask me if I prefer to have my teeth in wood or my legs in sponge.”

While speaking about his own club, however, the former Manchester United number 7 only had good things to say, especially about the current interim manager.

Speaking about the Norwegian tactician, Cantona admitted (via Mirror): “He’s got the soul of the club and you feel that he has been inspired by Alex Ferguson. It’s like Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola in Barcelona – Ole Gunnar is the spiritual son of Alex Ferguson.

“Not all players can become managers, but some of them can and for me it’s important that at a club like Manchester United you have somebody who has the soul of the club, who understands the club from inside.”

The legendary forward further backed Solskjaer for the permanent managerial position, as he added: “I think he should be given the job permanently. I would love to see that.

“I don’t know the agreement he has with the club, but for me as a fan – because now I am a United fan – it’s a great feeling to feel the soul of the club, finally. We lost that since Ferguson retired.”
