Solskjaer Names The United Player Who Can Become ‘The Next Michael Carrick’

Manchester United cruised to yet another away win, a historic eight consecutive one, against Crystal Palace with the final scoreline reading 3-1.
Romelu Lukaku’s decisive brace was the highlight of the game, with Joel Ward’s goal inserting some hope into the fixture for Palace before Ashley Young netted a brilliant winner to round up the encounter.
The final minutes of the meeting saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer give a debut to another United academy graduate – James Garner.
The 17-year-old was subbed on for Fred who had put in an awful showing for the entirety of the game. Many supporters would agree that Garner arguably put in a better display than the Brazilian for the five or so minutes he spent on the pitch.

He clearly succeeded in impressing Solskjaer, who had choice words for him.
Speaking after the game, the caretaker gaffer reviewed the youngster’s performance by saying: “I believe he’s got the chance to have a great future. Of course keep working, he knows we believe in him.”

It’s what he went on to add that will mean a lot for Garner: “We’ve got great faith in him as the next Michael Carrick. I know he’s young, I know it’s not fair on kids to compare to great players like Michael was, but he’s in the same mold.”
The former United player then revealed what specifically about the teenager seemed to jog in him the memory of the legend sitting next to him on the coaching bench: “He can see the game, he plays simple passes, he plays through the lines, which I thought Scott McTominay today did really well. Some of the passing through the lines to Paul (Pogba) was excellent.”
The debut was the 230th one that United have handed over to their academy players. Garner has been with the Mancunian outfit as young as their U-8s and some big things may await him down the line.
