Manchester United’s need for a summer overhaul was further highlighted by the nature of their Champions League ousting to Barcelona. The honeymoon period under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is well and truly over, and the lack of quality, intent, and leadership amongst the roster is painful to observe.

Now, the Red Devils are being linked with a host of talents for the summer window, varying in prices, position, and ages. However, two of these could be expensive yet rewarding young players to bring in.

As per Portuguese newspaper Record, United are slated to be second in line to try and sign Benfica youngsters Ruben Dias and João Félix.

The report adds that their agent Jorge Mendes is already on the verge of sealing a deal with Juventus for the duo, but the English side is still in the fray to try and make the signing.

This is all good news for Benfica. The youngsters are already touted for humongous transfer fees, with Dias’ release clause set at €60 million, while Felix may cost as much as €120 million.

With the spending power of the two European giants presently vying for their signatures, Benfica can certainly hope to emerge out of this with well over €180 million in their coffers.

Felix, 19, is amongst the more promising forwards in Europe, while the 21-year-old Dias could address some of United’s obvious defensive flaws. Of course, the more evident problem is whether United should spend so much on two young players.

While the club has been heavily critiqued in the past for spending blindly on aging stars, going the exact opposite route isn’t advisable either. Plus, with someone like Mendes representing the starlets, their eventual contracts won’t be a bargain either.

Years of impulse spending have made United more of an advertising locale rather than a European powerhouse, with their wage structure crumbling within itself.

With such reports doing the rounds, it is evident that the Mancunian giants will be able to decide whether to make old mistakes or rectify their woes.
