Ter Stegen Reveals What He Said To De Gea After The Full-Time Whistle

Manchester United suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Barcelona at Camp Nou, with David De Gea being one of the central figures during the second leg quarterfinal match-up.

The Spanish international conceded an easy goal – one which a player of his calibre should have kept out with his eyes closed – to hand the Catalans a 2-goal lead on the night.

After the full-time whistle, the 28-year-old was reportedly ‘unconsolable’, as he apologised to all his fellow teammates for costing them the match.

Red Devils’ boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sympathetic towards his goalkeeper, describing the folly as “unfortunate” and diverting the conversation towards their failure to capitalise on the chances upfront.

Apart from his manager and teammates, De Gea’s opponents too, had encouraging words to say after the game. Barcelona custodian Marc-Andre ter Stegen, in particular, was seen having a word with David post the full-time whistle.

When asked about what was said during that conversation, the German keeper told COPE: “After the game I told De Gea that we are all humans and that this could have happened to me as well.

“The truth is that it took me a while to celebrate that goal, because he shares the same position as me, and I share his pain. But life will continue.”

Ter Stegen also spoke about Leo Messi, the scorer of the goal in question, as he added: “Every time we take to the football field, I’m surprised by what he’s capable of doing. Leo can make a difference like nobody else and it’s always better to play with him than against him.”
