Juan Mata has insisted that David De Gea’s level remains ‘unquestionable’ despite recent errors.

The star goalkeeper has been enduring an abysmal run of games of late, with many comparing his current form with the woeful string of performances he displayed during the start of his Manchester United career.

De Gea was largely responsible for conceding the sole goal in the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday. The 28-year-old failed to handle Antonio Rudiger’s long shot, spilling the ball at the foot of Marcos Alonso, who found the back of the net expertly.

Before the goof-up against the Blues, the Spanish international also made huge errors against the likes of Barcelona and Everton, which ultimately ended up costing his side the game.

Many pundits and fans of the game have begun questioning De Gea’s abilities following his recent performances. However, his fellow teammate and compatriot Juan Mata has come to his rescue, dismissing the doubts over the custodian’s talent straightaway.

Mata, who scored for the Red Devils against his former club on Sunday, spoke about De Gea to Sky Sports after the game, stating: “David is unquestionable. His levels have been fantastic for this club.

“He has been the best player over the last years. The amount of points that he has saved us is incredible. We all have good and bad moments in our careers but for me the important thing is how you react, to react positively and do what he does best, which is be the best.

“I have 100 per cent confidence in him, we all have. Today he is not happy, we’re not happy, but he will come back to training with the best attitude, as always, and his level is unquestionable.”
