Rio Ferdinand In Awe Of Dutch Defender Matthijs De Ligt
Manchester United are expected to be in the summer transfer market for at least two defenders. Besides a right-back, the club is said to be eyeing a central defender as well. United want somebody with character to partner Victor Lindelof.
One principle target for United is Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, as per reports. The teenage sensation has everything in his game to succeed at the top level, and at this age, he has already shown plenty of composure.
Interestingly, De Ligt has garnered interest from several top clubs in the world. Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool are all believed to be in the race for the Dutch international.
United legend Rio Ferdinand is also in awe of the defender. While discussing Ajax’s first leg semi-final clash against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League, Ferdinand spoke highly about De Ligt, and wants United to sign him.

The former England international is being linked as a sporting director of United, who will oversee comings and goings in terms of player transfers.
Discussing on BT Sport studio, Gary Lineker asked Ferdinand: “If ever you were kind of a director or football at a big club anywhere, would he be the sort of player that you’d want to sign?”
This is how Rio responded: “He’d be on the list of every top team, every top team out there he’d be on that list, definitely. I see where you’re going Gary.”

Ferdinand then praised De Ligt, and said he is meant to be in the top stage: “I really, really love this player. Youngest captain to ever get to this stage of the tournament.
“Leading his team, there’s a personality about him I like. Bar his footballing ability that is obvious, he has a personality. He looks like he’s meant to be at this stage.”
It remains to be seen which club wins the race in signing De Ligt in the summer of 2019.
