According to the Daily Star, Matthijs de Ligt has snubbed a chance to join Manchester United in the summer. The Red Devils are said to have offered a £60 million bumper deal to sign the 19-year-old defensive sensation.

However, the Ajax player wasn’t attracted by the offer, with a source close to him allegedly stating: “Matthijs is going to become the best defender in the world. He will have the choice to join whoever he wants, but he has no interest in going to United. They are not the attractive proposition they once were. He knows he is in a strong bargaining position because his stock has risen so fast. He’s one of the most in demand stars on the planet.”

This could be a big upset for the Mancunian club who have been backing on financial incentives to sign major players for years now. The same report claims that United were willing to make de Ligt one of the most expensive teenagers in the world, with a five-year deal worth £250,000-a-week on the cards.

A more worrying trend is that this refusal from the starlet is believed to have arrived even before the Red Devils were mathematically out of the race for Champions League football for next season.
