Man City clinched the Premier League title on the final day of the season, becoming back-to-back winners of the English League, the first time that has occurred in over a decade.

Pep Guardiola’s men firmly asserted their dominance, although in a thin wire, with the final table in a state that Liverpool, who finished second, were just a point below the Mancunian giants.

The game away to Brighton started off tense for the champions, as the home side scored first, with Glen Murray finding the back of the net in the 27th minute. By that time, Sadio Mane had already scored for Liverpool at Anfield, which meant that despite Sergio Aguero’s almost instant equalizer, the Sky Blues wouldn’t have been able to retain their title at that point.

However, goals from Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez, and Gundogan swiftly set the champagne bottles rolling as Guardiola added another title to his European haul.

Twitter was filled with banter throughout the game, with supporters largely praising the brilliance of Mahrez and Laporte in the game. Many may have been hoping for a repeat of the 2012 drama wherein City were able to rob the title from Manchester United only in the final minutes of added time, but it was a less hectic affair this time around.

The fact that this win was their 14th consecutive one didn’t go amiss either as many pointed out that their form was one worthy of a title and that Liverpool’s season-long pursuit had somewhat dampened the sheer brilliance with which City persevered their way to their third Premier League title.

Guardiola’s men still have the FA Cup finals to look forward to where they will face Watford as the Spanish gaffer will still try to add to his silverware cabinet. Liverpool, meanwhile, have an arguably bigger prize on their sights as they face Tottenham in the Champions League final.
