Barcelona are considering making a shock move for Matteo Darmian.

Darmian has been on the fringes of the Manchester United squad for quite some time now. He has been consistently linked with a return to Italy in the previous transfer windows, but a move has failed to materialise each time.

Now, new reports emerging from Spain have linked the full-back with a shock transfer to the reigning La Liga champions, FC Barcelona.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan giants are eyeing Darmian as a potential backup for their first-choice left-back, Jordi Alba.

Barcelona had identified Bayern Munich star David Alaba and Real Betis’ Junior Firpo as their primary targets for the position, but the huge price tags on the duo have led them to consider other candidates.

Subsequently, Barca’s director of football, Eric Abidal, and his assistant Ramon Planes have identified alternatives in the form of Darmian and Augsburg’s Philipp Max.

Darmian only has a year left on his current Old Trafford deal, and will therefore will available for cheap. In fact, he could be allowed to leave for a meagre sum of £9 million this summer.

Barcelona have received positive reports regarding the Italy international, who can function on both flanks. Hence, this surprise transfer effectively seems to be a genuine possibility.
