What Robin van Persie Said About Greenwood And His ‘Finishing’

The most consistent ray of joy for Manchester United fans in recent weeks is the fact that Mason Greenwood has been exceptional in front of goal.

The 18-year-old has already netted 8 goals across all competitions so far this season and his last week’s haul included a winning brace against AZ in the Europa League as well as a crucial equalizer against Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The most recurrent comparison that fans like to make when Greenwood is at his goal-scoring best is that of Robin Van Persie. The Dutch striker was a force to be reckoned with during his influential stay with the Red Devils and Greenwood’s style and approach certainly has a resemblance.

In fact, the former Arsenal man was questioned about the Greenwood comparison during an Instagram question and answer session and his answers were remarkable.

Speaking about the youngster, Van Persie said: “I think he will be very good because during every game he tries to copy me. My style, my technique, my left foot, my way of finishing… so, I’m sure he will end up well.”

A well-humored reply that aptly captures the extent of the parallels as well.

However, there is no denying Greenwood’s brilliance for the club at this level. At present, he is second only to Marcus Rashford for the most number of goals netted for the club so far this campaign and this is despite functioning primarily as a substitute or second-team striker.

As of such, his performances make a staunch argument as to why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should consider starting him more often. Anthony Martial can easily be replaced by the teenager when form and poor performances necessitate it.

That certainly appears to be a strong long-term target for Greenwood, and one even question whether United need to invest in another back-up striker.
