Twitter Laughs As Van Gaal Plays Ashley Young Up Front
The score was 0-0 at the half-time against Tottenham and Manchester United needed a goal to keep their Champions League chances alive.
Surprisingly, Louis van Gaal replaced Marcus Rashford with Ashley Young as the lone striker, while natural striker Anthony Martial was played out on the left wing.
Manchester United ended up losing the game 3-0 thanks to three quick-fire goals from Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela, and as expected, Manchester United fans were left completely baffled by the Dutchman’s tactics.
Ashley Young has now played for United under Van Gaal at right-back, left-back, left wing, right wing, central midfield and up front.

Van Gaal is a funny guy. Martial is out wide while Young is playing as a central forward.

Rashford off, Martial stays left and Young on as central striker. Would love to know what's going on in LVG's head.

Ashley Young's career as a striker lasted precisely 31 minutes.

LVG be like:
Ashley Young = Striker!
Martial = Out Left!
Lingard = Number 10!
Mata = Out Wide!Man United fans: pic.twitter.com/67F0jSDClI

I can't believe Louis van Gaal's tactic of Ashley Young up front, Fred the Red in midfield and Eric Djemba-Djemba at the back isn't working.
— Jonny Sharples (@JonnyGabriel) April 10, 2016
Pathetic defending from United again. Not to worry, LVG's master plan has Ashley young at centre forward. What a clown. #MUFC

Van Gaal thinks he's outsmarting everyone with these bizarre decisions (Young at centre forward), but he's just coming across insane. #mufc

Takes off Rashford, brings in Young and plays him as central striker and Martial on the left.

why is Van Gaal playing Young, who's a winger, at striker… and Martial who's a striker, on the wing

Ashley Young up front is a joke. Defensive sub to harrass their defence #MUFC

Not to worry Manchester United fans, you've got Ashley Young up front… #THFCvMUFC
— Jason Le Miere (@JasonLeMiere) April 10, 2016
Ashley Young playing the Jean Beausejour role. We've reached the point where even he doesn't know his natural position
— Tom Victor (@tomvictor) April 10, 2016
Why United are playing Martial on the wing and Young up front, I will never know. The lack of a focal point for the attacks are troubling..
— Ashley Briggs (@Briggsy_33) April 10, 2016
Ashley Young up top. Loving these Van Gaal cheeky banter tactics.

Timothy Fosu Mensah goes off. Man United concede 3 goals in 5 minutes. But let's play Ashley Young as Striker☺
— Aryan (@theunitedmanc) April 10, 2016
Ashley Young (last goal April 2015) centre forward. Anthony Martial (13 goals this season) left wing. Van Gaal trying to look clever? #MUFC

We've seen some crazy things this season. From Phil Jones taking corners to now, Ashley Young playing centre forward.

We should lose this game for the nonsense tactics van gaal is using…young upfront, mata on the wings… Hisssssssssss
— Roy Mustang (@blaq_boi) April 10, 2016
Not to forget..Schneiderlin on corners as well….
— Rob (@kalyangoR) April 10, 2016
Was Rashford injured? Ashley Young playing as a striker? Martial on the wing? Why am I surprised? Any more questions? How's your Ma?
— Eric Lalor (@ericlalor) April 10, 2016
Ashley Young's natural position – left wing, Martial's natural position- centre forward. LvG plays Young forward & Martial left, I give up.

Only a genius like van Gaal can play Young as a lone striker and put Martial on the left. He's the Albert Einstein of football. #MUFC
— Ahad Farhan (@farhan_nihilist) April 10, 2016
When you notice Rashford is off, Martial stays left and Young on as central striker. #THFCvMUFC https://t.co/zIiRaO5E9V
