Diego Simeone is Atletico Madrid’s God, Says Former Winger
Former Atletico winger Cristian Rodriguez has labelled manager Diego Simeone as the club’s “God”.
Simeone took over at the Vicente Calderon in 2011, and has since managed to establish Atletico as one of the giants of European football, helping the club win huge honours like the Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Copa del Rey.
However, Simeone did the unthinkable in 2013-14, when he snatched the La Liga title away from Barcelona and Real Madrid. He also took Atletico to the Champions League final in the same season, but here his team suffered a 4-1 defeat post-extra-time to rivals Real Madrid.
His achievements at Atletico have earned him plaudits from around the world, with former winger Cristian Rodriguez also heaping a lot of praise on the 45-year-old Argentinian.
“He put together an excellent coaching staff as well as a very good playing squad,” Rodriguez told Marca.
“He is a coach that demands 100 per cent from you. He really knows how a dressing room should be, and that helps a lot.
“At the club I think he is like a God. Everyone loves and respects him. He is a coach that has lifted many trophies as a coach and a trainer. It’s like he is untouchable at the club and the people love him.”
