Jose Mourinho Looking For An Experienced Defender
The Sunday Times reports that Manchester United’s new boss, Jose Mourinho, is looking to sign an old and experienced center back to add to his current selection.
Jose Mourinho will be looking to add a center-back to his current Manchester United squad by the end of this summer. The Portuguese manager has already signed a defensive option, Eric Bailly, but is looking for an older and more seasoned player.
The Special One is currently trying to seal the deal with Paul Pogba, who is going to be Manchester United’s fourth capture this summer. Mourinho mentioned at the beginning of the season that he is only looking to sign four players this summer, and has already secured the signatures of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimović, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

But, according to the report, Jose is still looking to increase his defensive options. Mourinho’s oldest defender at the moment is Chris Smalling, who is 26-years-old. But apart from Chris, and maybe Phil Jones, the Manchester United squad lack an old, solid, and reliable defender – the kind of defenders that Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were.

Mourinho is currently looking at Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci to fill in that gap, but the Italian Champions are already troubling United with the transfer of Paul Pogba, meaning that they would be even more reluctant to let go of their prized defender.
Jose Fonte and Ezequiel Garay are the other names that were mentioned in the news report. Both have a great amount of experience, although Jose Fonte would be the better choice given his experience in the Premier League. However, he is already 32 years old, and could be lacking the pace and strength needed for the role.
Ezequiel Garay, 29, has made over 300 appearances in his career, and also helped his nation come second in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
It is now up to Mourinho to make the crucial decision.
