Manchester United Not Panicking Over Fonte

Manchester United are in no hurry to sign Jose Fonte, and are prepared to wait until deadline day to secure his services, according to The Metro.

Fonte has been regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford in the last couple of weeks. Mourinho is said to be in the market for an experienced central defender, and his Portuguese compatriot Fonte seems to fit the bill perfectly.

However, United have strength in depth in all positions as the new season gets underway. Having signed Eric Bailly from Villarreal at the start of the summer for a fee around the region of £30 million, the club now seem to have a vast number of options in defence.

With Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Daley Blind and Timothy Fosu-Mensah all competing for a spot at the heart of United’s back-line, the club are in no rush to sign another defender. Hence, they will not be panicking over a deal for Fonte, and will leave it to deadline day if they have to.

The 32-year-old Southampton captain has also been linked with a switch to Arsenal in recent weeks, with manager Arsene Wenger desperate to sign a center-back before the shutting of the transfer window on the 31st of August. However, the Gunners believe United have the deal secured, and hence do not see a point in preparing a bid for the defender.

Fonte is a key player for Southampton, but the club have a habit of selling their most prized assets, with Victor Wanyama leaving for Tottenham and Sadio Mane joining Liverpool this summer.

Fonte has already stated that he is ‘flattered’ by United’s reported interest.

“If the interest is there, it is a reason to be flattered to be associated with a club like Manchester United,” Fonte said, according to Mais Futebol. “But I have a contract with Southampton, and I’m just focused on my work, to make a great season.

“I will not deny that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that it makes me happy to be associated with it, but to be Manchester United’s player is a big difference.”

Jose Mourinho, however, has refused to comment on any sort of deal regarding the Portuguese defender.
