Real Madrid superstar Luka Modric has claimed that his team could become the first one in history to defend the UEFA Champions League title this season.
Having won the European crown last season, Zinedine Zidane’s men are all set to defend their title, and Modric believes his teammates can successfully get it done under the Frenchman’s leadership, and their first step towards doing so would be to beat their Round of 16 opponents, Napoli.
Speaking in the pre-match press conference, the Croatian midfielder stated (via Tportal): “Never has a team won the title twice in a row, but I believe we can be the first one to successfully defend the title. Napoli is the first obstacle, and we must go one game at a time.”
He then went on to give some insight about the Serie A outfit, and said: “They are a great team, in the middle and in attack. Of course the fight in the midfield will be difficult, the important thing for us is to get control of the game and play well, hopefully it will be a good match and a good result.
“They are in good form, they are playing very well, but we are playing at home and want to start well, we want to show that we are in a good shape.”
Lastly, Modric also talked about Napoli’s former forward – the legendary Diego Maradona, who will be present at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday to watch the two European powerhouses clash in the Spanish capital.
Speaking of the Argentine, the 31-year-old claimed: “He is one of the best players in football history. A great person and one of the best players, I saw him at the FIFA gala of The Best. We are happy that he is at the Bernabeu, but thank God that he is not playing. That’s why we’re happy.”
