Manchester United Conduct Initial Talks With Napoli Star
Manchester United held a secret meeting with the representatives of Napoli forward Dries Mertens, according to reports in Italy.
United boss Jose Mourinho seems to have already begun preparations for the upcoming summer transfer window. As per Italian news outlet Il Mattino, the Portuguese sent some club officials to Naples earlier this week, in order to conduct initial talks with Napoli star Dries Mertens.
The Belgium international has been in superb form since he was moved from the wings to a more central striking position, and he has already bagged 23 goals and 11 assists in all competitions for the Serie A club this season.
In fact, his top drawer performances also won him the Belgian Player of the Year award in December, ahead of Premier League superstars Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne.

Mertens is now being heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, after he was spotted speaking with the club officials in the lobby of the Neapolitan hotel in Naples earlier this week. The talks between the two parties reportedly began at 9 AM, and lasted for two whole hours.
Despite the 29-year-old’s representatives denying these reports by claiming the meeting was actually conducted for personal reasons, almost every major news source has now labeled the versatile forward as a transfer target for the Red Devils.
Moreover, with Merten’s current contract with Napoli coming to an end in 2018, and with the player himself refusing to sign a new deal with the Italian club, Manchester United may very well be able to lure him to Old Trafford for free once the summer transfer window reopens.
