Manchester United have expressed concrete interest in signing Monaco duo Kylian Mbappe and Tiemoue Bakayoko, according to reports.

The Red Devils sent their head scout Marcel Bout to the Stade Louis II on Wednesday to watch the pair play against Manchester City in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Both the players ended up performing very impressively against Pep Guardiola’s side, as Mbappe, 18, scored the opener and Bakayoko, 22, bagged the late winning goal to help Monaco progress through to the quarterfinals.

And following their top-class display against United’s inter-city rivals, Jose Mourinho seems to have added the two youngsters to his list of transfer targets for the upcoming summer window.

The English giants have been on the lookout for a replacement for the ageing Michael Carrick for quite some time now. Moreover, with Morgan Schneiderlin already having departed the Old Trafford outfit for Everton, and Bastian Schweinsteiger and Marouane Fellaini facing unsure futures at the club, Mourinho is keen to bring in midfield reinforcements, and Bakayoko could very well be one of the many recruits in the summer.

Furthermore, with Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann most likely to prolong his stay in the Spanish capital, Manchester United are now looking for alternatives to strengthen their strike force as well, due to which they may try and make a move for Kylian Mbappe before any other interested party snatches him up.

However, as per Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev, the Ligue 1 outfit will do whatever it takes to keep hold of Mbappe.

Vasilyev spoke after his team’s 3-1 victory over Manchester City, and told RTL (via ESPN): “Our intention is to keep Mbappe. Mbappe is a product of our youth academy. He is our DNA. I am very proud. We have a real team. The first half was excellent – the sort of performance that the very top teams make.”
