Barcelona ace Lionel Messi has finally agreed to sign a new contract extension with the club, as per the reports from Spanish news outlet AS.

The Argentine’s contract situation was known to all, and the Catalan club was seen trying everything in their power to tie down the five-time Ballon d’Or. However, nothing concrete regarding the same was agreed, and it was even reported that Messi’s father flew to Barcelona back in February to discuss the personal terms, but with no effect.

The Argentine’s contract runs until 2018, and there was a high possibility that he might have left the club for free, with clubs like Manchester City keeping a close eye on him. But now, it seems like the topsy-turvy speculation has finally been tied down.

The aforementioned source has also added that Messi will be signing a five-year deal, and this will see him earning a whopping £35million-a-year. And this, furthermore, has certainly been a major step for Barcelona, who also managed to tie down both Suarez and Neymar last year.

A busy summer transfer is expected for the Catalans as they will be on the lookout for a like-to-like replacement for their soon to be departing manager Luis Enrique. Besides that, the ageing legs of Andres Iniesta are demanding a trusting deputy as well, while a bawl to get a perfect right-back has been quite evident throughout the season.

With all this being said and done, Messi’s father is presumed to travel back to Spain next month to finalize the entire speculation, and this will surely ease down the pressure off Barcelona’s board.
