La Liga giants Barcelona have made Atletico Madrid talisman, Antoine Griezmann, their prime target for next summer, with the Frenchman also having given a ‘positive response’ to the Catalan club’s interest, according to reports in Spain.
Griezmann was mooted to make a move to Premier League heavyweights Manchester United in the summer transfer window, but due to the transfer ban, which was upheld by Court of Arbitration for Sport following Atletico’s failed appeal, imposed on the Spanish club by FIFA, the move failed to materialize.
However, the Red Devils weren’t the only club after the 26-year-old’s signature, as Barcelona too, were heavily linked with Griezmann following Neymar’s world record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. And now, as per Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan giants have started off with ‘Operation Griezmann’ to land the France international.
It was reported that La Blaugrana were not in favour to pay the inflated €200 million release clause for the striker in the summer transfer window, after Atletico revised the terms of Griezmann’s contract and doubled his buyout clause for a year to ward off interest from elite clubs.
But with the value of his release clause coming back to original next summer, Barca are set to go out all guns blazing in order to sign the Frenchman before other clubs, potentially United and Real Madrid, start preying on him. Furthermore, even the 26-year-old forward is believed to have given a ‘positive response,’ and is said to be ‘excited’ by Barcelona’s interest.
Meanwhile, Los Rojiblancos have been off to a poor start, and already seem to be way off from posing a challenge for the Spanish title. Even in the European competition, Diego Simeone’s side faces an uphill battle after having drawn their last game at Qarabag.
