Harry Maguire has settled well in his first season at Old Trafford, but the uncertainty in defence remains as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to find a reliable centre-back to partner the former Leicester City man.

Eric Bailly looked promising against Chelsea and LASK pre-lockdown, but there’s always concern due to his injury record.

Victor Lindelof, who was signed by Jose Mourinho from Benfica, has been a regular starter alongside Harry Maguire this season, but doesn’t have the same aerial prowess as his partner.

Therefore, Man Utd are rumoured to be in the market for a new defender who will provide competition for the Sweden international.

According to ESPN, the Red Devils have made an enquiry for Real Valladolid centre-back Mohamed Salisu.

The 21-year-old has a €12m release clause in his contract, and is represented by Juan Mata’s father, who recently revealed that Salisu could leave the La Liga side at the end of the season.

“Salisu is another very young African discovery. This year he has been a sensation in La Liga because at only 20 years old, 1.90m, left-footed, and playing centre back in this division is not easy,” Juan Mata Sr told VIP Deportivo.

“The truth is that I think this may be his window [to leave], because interests have arisen from many clubs, and he deserves it.”
