Twitter Reacts To Lukaku’s Performance In Europa League Final
Sevilla FC were crowned winners of the Europa League yet again with an excellent 3-2 win over Inter Milan in the final at Cologne.
The game started in an electric manner with the Italians being awarded a penalty within minutes of kick-off and Romelu Lukaku made no mistake in burying that one.
However, the Spaniards were exceptional in their response, coming back to equalize minutes later via an excellent header from Luuk de Jong. The seldom-used forward used his head once more in the same half to make it 2-1.
On that occasion, the Serie A giants didn’t remain quite for too long with the experienced Diego Godin heading in another equalizer just under three minutes later.
However, all that was in vain as Lukaku found himself deflecting a picturesque bicycle kick from Diego Carlos to let in an unfortunate own-goal that ended up costing them the title.
Twitter went berserk to reactions about the Belgian striker’s night.
After spending the last week having to see people re-write history over Lukaku, it’s obviously enjoyable to see him boot the ball in to the back of his own net to win the final for the opposition 😂 pic.twitter.com/cM7DjTRO0Z

Rival fans having to quietly delete their “Lukaku, Young and Sanchez really left Man Utd to go on and instantly win a European trophy 🤣” tweets from the drafts? Damn, that’s tough

A great season for Lukaku but tonight was the best and worst of him. Great run and composure to win and score penalty but one-on-one finish was reminiscent of the pivotal chances he spurned at start of last season. His penalty box defending in the 2017 derby was disastrous.

Lukaku really tried to do a Solskjær but at the wrong end 💀

On one side, it cannot be denied what an excellent debut season Lukaku had in Italy. The 34 goals he netted in all competitions is the joint-best in a debut season for Inter Milan, matched with none other than Ronaldo R9.
However, the mistake that led to the own-goal cannot be denied at all and scoring on both sides of the scoreline in a European final is not something one forgets easily.
Ardent fans will also argue that the whole scenario itself ought to have not occurred as the penalty-creating foul on Lukaku from Carlos ought to have been a red card early on. Alas, even VAR didn’t rule it out with the defender who has now given away a penalty in the quarter-final, semi-final, and final of the competition being lucky to get away with a yellow card.
All in all, it cannot be denied that Lukaku has had an exceptional rise from his droughts from Manchester United and the next season will certainly be something to look forward to.
