Gary Neville Explains How Van de Beek Will Fit Alongside Pogba & Fernandes
Gary Neville feels that Donny van de Beek can start instantly at Manchester United.
Old Trafford’s latest arrival has fans buzzing, largely due to the freedom of options that he gives to Ole Gunnar Solskjær and company.
There has been plenty of speculation as to where the 23-year-old fits in the club’s existing setup and if he would even be given a regular start.
However, a former Red Devil certainly feels like the Dutchman can be an instant addition to the starting eleven.
Speaking to Stadium Astro, Gary Neville opined that van de Beek could play a crucial role at the club, stating: “No, I think he will start. If you look at that area of midfield at United, it does look like they’ve got attacking midfield players in abundance with Pogba, Fernandes and Van de Beek now. But we look at the midfield make-up of teams nowadays, we’re not seeing teams play with too many defensive midfield players.”
Neville then goes on to illustrate the traditional set-up, adding: “It used to be that you would have defensive midfield players like Claude Makelele or Jordan Henderson or Fabinho at Liverpool – it looks like Manchester United will play Pogba a little bit deeper or maybe even a different system because I’m sure he [Van de Beek] will start.”
His analysis of the modern style is certainly something as he goes on to state: “But if you look at modern midfields now, there is less structure in the teams, less organisation, more fluidity and I think that’s the way that Manchester United are now with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. I think he wants players who interchange and move around and they will be very difficult to play against.”
Fans will without a doubt be eager to get a taste of something of the sort itself, especially since the likes of Scott McTominay and Fred are excellent back-up options to have.
