Manchester United have awarded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a new three-year contract, recognising the progress his side have made in the last two seasons.

The Norwegian is yet to win a trophy at the Old Trafford outfit as a manager, with his team coming closest to end the silverware drought when they finished runners-up in the Europa League.

However, his overall reign until now, has been encouraging, and there’s a lot of intangibles to show off which point that the Red Devils are moving in the right direction.

Overseeing a cultural reboot, Solskjaer has also led United to third and second place finishes in successive league seasons. Since his first game in charge in December 2018, only sides managed by Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have collected more Premier League points than Ole’s Red.

Additionally, consistent Champions League football wasn’t a given under the previous three managers in the post-Sir Alex era.

“We are more confident than ever that, under Ole’s leadership, we are heading in the right direction,” said the club’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward.

Now, the Premier League giants need to show the same confidence in their manager by backing him properly in the transfer market.

With Tom Heaton and Jadon Sancho, United have kicked-off their summer window in a positive way. But to take the ‘next step’ Solskjaer and his staff should be provided with more quality signings.
