Anthony Martial is on Borussia Dortmund’s shortlist of candidates to replace Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian has started the Bundesliga season in spectacular fashion, scoring seven goals in Dortmund’s opening six games. The Frenchman, meanwhile, is yet to open his account, and has fewer appearances in all competitions than the number of times the former’s name has been on the score-sheet this campaign.

But despite such a difference in their productivity, Martial could end up taking Haaland’s place in Marco Rose’s setup.

According to German outlet SPORT1 (via the Daily Mail), Dortmund scouting staff are in search for a new talisman, with Haaland destined to leave the Signal Iduna Park next summer due to a release clause in his contract. And Martial is considered to be his ‘like for like’ replacement.

At Old Trafford, the France international has lost his way, dropping behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, and Mason Greenwood as United’s preferred central attacker.

It is believed the Premier League giants would be willing to part ways with the former AS Monaco man for a fee between £42m and £47m. But the financial package – not helped by Martial’s astronomical wages at United – of the transfer is deemed too expensive by the German outfit.

However, in the right conditions, the 2015 Golden Boy award winner could still rejuvenate his career. A confident Martial dribbling at pace would be a menace for defenders in the Bundesliga, where open space is found more often than in the Premier League.
