Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone was full of praise for Manchester United’s midfield.

The defending La Liga champions host the Premier League giants at Wanda Metropolitano in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.

Ahead of the clash, Simeone, whose side are struggling in La Liga this season, insisted it’s not going to be an easy ride for Atletico against United, mentioning their impressive form under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

Although United have only lost once under the German, they have dropped points on a regular basis, largely because of their midfield’s inability to control games and dictate the play.

Nevertheless, speaking in his pre-match press conference, Simeone waxed lyrical about Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, stating: “They have an incredible midfield. I am incredibly impressed with the work rate. Pogba and McTominay are two of the best midfielders in the world with a great balance.”

Despite how highly Simeone rates Pogba and McTominay, one of the two could end up being replaced by Fred in the starting XI on Wednesday. The Brazilian’s work rate off the ball could prove to very important away from home.

Meanwhile, Simeone will be without his captain Koke. The Spanish midfielder is incredible in possession and is going to be a big miss for Atletico.
