Manchester United equalised late in the game through Anthony Elanga to leave all to play for in the second leg against Atletico Madrid.
Ralf Rangnick’s side weren’t at it in the opening minutes, as they lost possession of the ball multiple times around their penalty area, leading to Joao Felix putting the home side ahead with a diving header in the 7th minute of the game.
However, despite their overwhelming dominance in the first half, Atletico couldn’t add more goals, and were eventually punished by the visitors.
David de Gea – 4.5
Was nervous with the ball at his feet on his return to the Spanish capital.
Victor Lindelof – 5.5
Made a great block to deny Atletico from scoring in the 3rd minute, but looked lost at right-back.
Raphael Varane – 6.5
Stepped up after the break following a sloppy first-half display.
Harry Maguire – 6.0
Should’ve marked Felix better to prevent Atletico’s opener.
Luke Shaw – 5.0
Was relatively comfortable in defence, but uninspiring on the opposite end.
Fred – 6.5
The only United midfielder who was up for a hard-fought battle in the middle of the park.
Paul Pogba – 4.0
Couldn’t manage to beat Atletico’s press and kept losing the ball.
Bruno Fernandes – 6.0
Disappointing game by his standards, but managed to assist Elanga with a pin point through ball. First player representing an English club in Champions League history to assist a goal in six consecutive matches.
Marcus Rashford – 4.0
His decision making was frustrating tonight. Doesn’t deserve to start ahead of Elanga on current form.
Cristiano Ronaldo – 5.0
Lacked service, but wasteful the few times he received the ball. And when will Rangnick take him off free kick duties?
Jadon Sancho – 5.5
Switched flanks multiple times with Rashford, but didn’t find any space against Atletico’s back-five to make something happen.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6.0
Encouraging little cameo for the right-back. Deserves a go in the second leg.
Nemanja Matic – 6.5
United kept possession with ease after his introduction.
Alex Telles – 7.0
Energetic as always and offered a lot more than Shaw going forward.
Anthony Elanga – 7.5
What a night for the academy graduate. Scored with his first touch of the match.
Jesse Lingard – N/A
