Chelsea have enquired about Harry Maguire’s availability amid their attempts to strengthen their defence.
Thomas Tuchel has already spent big on Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella, and has his eyes set on Wesley Fofana. But Leicester City are not very keen to lose their centre-back, and it could take a world record bid to bring the Frenchman to Stamford Bridge.
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea raised the possibility of signing Maguire during talks with United over Christian Pulisic’s transfer. The Red Devils are interested in taking the USMNT captain on loan.
Maguire could be an ideal right-sided centre-back in Tuchel’s back three formation, but despite their interest in the England international, Chelsea are still prioritising signing Fofana.
There’s a growing optimism the 21-year-old will move to West London. He’s pushing to leave Leicester, and asked manager Brendan Rodgers to be not included in City’s matchday squad to face Southampton.
Meanwhile, Maguire’s place in the United starting XI is understood to be uncertain. Raphael Varane is determined to start against Liverpool on Monday.
The United skipper was far from his side’s biggest problem in their defeats against Brighton and Brentford, but a reshuffle in the backline is needed to avoid another thrashing against Liverpool. Although David de Gea is certain to retain his place between the sticks due to the lack of a top class back-up goalkeeper at Old Trafford.
