Manchester United Working On A Deal To Sign World Cup Star On A Free Transfer
Erik ten Hag is looking to refresh the goalkeeping department, leading to Manchester United exploring the possibility of signing Yann Sommer.
The Switzerland international, who was one of the best players in the Euros, starred once again for his side, taking them to the round of 16 at the World Cup in Qatar. But a Ronaldo-less Portugal proved too much for the Swiss.
Sommer has been excellent between the sticks for Borussia Monchengladbach as well but is set to leave the Bundesliga outfit when his contract expires at the end of the season.
United, meanwhile, are searching for a new goalkeeper. Martin Dubravka, who conceded four goals against Cadiz in his side’s first of the two mid-season friendlies in Spain, is expected to return to Newcastle following the end of his loan spell. He has only made one competitive appearance for the Red Devils.
Meanwhile, the long-term future of David de Gea is still not decided, with United yet to open talks over a new contract. They are also yet to exercise the option of extending his deal by another 12 months. The Spaniard, who wasn’t part of Luis Enrique’s World Cup squad, will also be a free agent at the end of the campaign.
According to ESPN, the Premier League giants are working on a deal to bring Sommer to Old Trafford on a free transfer next summer. United will be able to make contact with the 33-year-old’s representatives from January 1.
