The news cycle around Manchester United over the past few days was largely consumed by the possible players that the club could purchase in the summer transfer window.

The potential acquisition of Matthijs de Ligt, in particular, dominated the headlines. The Dutch defender is expected to potentially join Manchester United after there were certain issues in the finances of his transfer to Barcelona. United are believed to have entranced the teenager with a financially superior offer.

However, that news was momentarily forgotten when the legends of the 1999 UEFA Champions League final got together for a treble reunion game, in commemoration of 20 years since that momentous occasion in English football.

The event was a charity game with funds going to the Manchester United Foundation for the care of specially-abled children. The United legends emerged victorious with a 5-0 scoreline.

During the encounter, Jaap Stam put forth a splendid display of defensive brilliance, leading to numerous tweets about how he still functions as the finest Dutch defender and that de Ligt has a lot to learn before he can claim that particular accolade.

After the game, Stam was quizzed about the de Ligt saga and he weighed in by stating the following: “I think he would suit very well over here if they’re trying to pick him up. I am not sure if that’s the truth, of course, because a lot of things have been said and have been written as well.”

Stam goes on to add: “But he is a player that absolutely fits in here, but it is up to him as well. He’s the type of player that a manager, I think, wants to work with.”

The possibility of the transfer has received yet another delay with the player himself stating that a decision will be made after Holland plays two more games.

The more cynical supporters claim that the teenager’s agent Mino Raiola is merely teasing the United supporter base in order to draw out a better offer from Barca. Despite that, the Red Devils hold faith.
