Manchester United are trying to use their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos to ward off any interest for David de Gea, according to latest reports.
The Manchester United keeper came extremely close to joining the La Liga champions in 2015 only for a deal to fall through at the very last moment. The Spaniard ultimately had no other choice but to sign a four-year contract extension at Old Trafford and helped them win the FA Cup last season.
During the January transfer window several reports claimed Madrid were willing to renew their interest in de Gea in the summer.
But Don Balon suggest Mourinho has chalked out a perfect plan to keep his star asset.
The Spanish outlet now suggest Mourinho will use his interest in the German midfielder Toni Kroos to complicate Madrid’s move for de Gea.
Though United have kept Kroos in their summer wishlist, Mourinho will only make an offer if Madrid come calling for his goalkeeper.
The United hierarchy tried to sign the German during his time at Bayern Munich back in 2014. However, the sacking of David Moyes and appointment of Louis van Gaal eventually saw a deal collapsed.
But Kroos has gone on to shine for Real Madrid and helped the Spanish giants win the Champions League last season.
It is definitely an interesting strategy from the Portuguese boss to make sure the two clubs do not enter in another negotiation over de Gea at the end of the season.
