Manchester United have awarded Michael Carrick an Old Trafford testimonial match that will take place this summer.

Carrick joined the Red Devils from Tottenham Hotspur back in 2006, and has since been a vital part of Manchester United’s midfield. The Englishman has been pivotal in helping the club win numerous trophies, including 5 Premier League titles, an FA Cup, 2 League Cups, 6 Community Shields, 1 UEFA Champions League, and a FIFA Club World Cup.

And now, this decorated midfielder has been awarded a testimonial match at Old Trafford, to celebrate his 11 years with Manchester United. This testimonial game will be held on June 4, 2017, and it will be played between a Manchester United 2008 XI and Michael Carrick All-Stars XI.

The confirmed list of players that will feature for the United XI includes Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, and Ryan Giggs. Players to play in the All-Stars team include Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Michael Owen. More star footballers are expected to join these teams in the coming weeks.

The money raised through this game will be distributed to the charities chosen by the Michael Carrick Foundation, which is a charity in itself.

Speaking of his testimonial, Michael Carrick stated: “To have played for the greatest football club for 11 years is something that I’m very proud of and it is an honour to have been given a testimonial. The game will be very special for myself and my family and I hope it will also be a memorable day of celebration for all involved.

“It is such a privilege to have this amazing opportunity and I’m excited at the prospect of bringing together some former team-mates as well as some of the best players I’ve played against.

“The incredible support I’ve received over the years is something I’m very grateful for and I could never thank you, the fans, enough. As much as the occasion is about football, I also see this as a chance to give something back.

“All the proceeds from the game are going to charity. I hope to raise as much money as possible for my Foundation to help make a difference to children’s lives. It’s something I’m very passionate about and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to making this testimonial possible.”
