Manchester United will go through an extremely busy schedule of fixtures and have to play three times next week. Mourinho’s men have an important FA Cup quarter-final showdown with rivals Chelsea on Monday night. And this game will be followed by their second-leg tie with Rostov in the Europa League on Thursday and a Premier League match against Middlesbrough on Sunday.
However, despite the congested fixture list, Jose Mourinho has made it clear he will not be dipping into Nicky Butt’s academy for players.
And instead, he will play a strong side made up of first-team regulars to give them the best chance against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.
“Monday we don’t go with a Nicky Butt team. We cannot go with Nicky Butt’s team,” Mourinho said.
“It is not Chelsea’s fault that we were given this Monday match, so we have to make changes for sure because we play Thursday against Rostov and they play Sunday against Terek Grozny.
“But we cannot go to Stamford Bridge with a Nicky Butt team.”
He also admitted the importance of the Europa League as a potential route into next season’s Champions League for a side currently sitting sixth in the Premier League.
“We want to keep the two goals open. In the Europa League, if you manage to go to the quarter-finals, then in the quarter-finals, you feel it so we have to try by every means,” said Mourinho, whose side have already won the English League Cup this season.
