The competition has produced Europe's top-rated clubs more number of times (18) than any other league. The Spanish League is currently home to two of the best football players of this generation – Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. La Liga has always featured the best footballers on the planet; in fact, superstars featuring in this league have won the highest number of Ballon d'Or awards (19).

La Liga is contested by 20 of the best clubs in Spain. Each team faces the 19 others two times per season, from the month of August to May. The format of this competition is a double round-robin system, and it features 380 matches per season. The teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and none for defeats. Teams are placed in the table according to their total points. In case of ties, the factors that determine the tie-break are head-to-head points, followed by head-to-head goal difference, head-to-head goals scored, total goal difference, total goals scored, Fairplay score, and lastly, a play-off match in a neutral stadium.

So far, a total of 60 teams have featured in the La Liga since its formation. However, only 9 of those clubs have managed to win this prestigious competition – Real Madrid (32), Barcelona (24), Atletico Madrid (10), Athletic Bilbao (8), Valencia (6), Real Sociedad (2), Deportivo La Coruna, Sevilla, and Real Betis (1).
