The Italian League is widely regarded as the most tactical football league in the world. It is also ranked fourth among the European football leagues as per UEFA's league coefficient. The Serie A has been responsible for producing the highest number of European Cup finalists – 27 Italian clubs have reached the finals, and 12 of those teams have tasted European glory.

The decorated title is contested by 20 of the best clubs in Italy. Each club faces the 19 others on two different occasions throughout the course of the season, which lasts from August to May. The teams are awarded three points for a victory, one point for a draw, and none for a loss. The position in the league table is determined on the basis of total points.
